“Rex! Wake up!”

Somebody is shaking my shoulder. I raise my head abruptly, almost head-butting Jessie.

“Careful, damn it,” she barks.

“What’s going on?” I ask, looking around. It’s quiet. Kitty is lying beside me, rubbing her eyes.

“They’re showing Wheeler on the news,” Jessie answers.

Wheeler. The mere mention of his name instantly wakes me up. I grab my rifle and follow Jessie into the living room.

“Hey, wait up for me,” Kitty says sleepily.

We sit down in front of the TV set running commercials. The volume is off. Dustin snores on the couch. Jessie smokes nervously, although her face reveals no emotion. Kitty enters the room, yawning, still groggy from sleep. She plops down on the floor at my feet, props herself against my legs and complains, “I’m so sleepy. What time is it?”

The commercial ends and I shush at Kitty to keep quiet. Jessie grabs the remote and turns the volume up. I lean forward, peering into the screen. This is the first time I’ve seen Wheeler since our escape.

He’s sitting in a comfortable looking armchair in front of Lola Great, the most popular reporter in the Republic. Wheeler is looking directly into the camera, a well-measured, confident smile on his face. Not too wide to seem arrogant and not too small to appear shy. Just the right mixture of confidence and friendliness. He comes across with a very respectable and friendly look. I guess Wheeler could have become a successful lawyer or even a politician having such a polished appearance. Upon seeing him, one might never imagine him being a merciless killer who enjoys hurting the innocent. A first time viewer would never believe he’s the maniac responsible for organizing multiple violent acts of terrorism.

I can’t even hear what Wheeler is saying at first. His words slip right through my consciousness, because all I can think about is killing him. I vividly remember him shooting down little Lena. I recall him beating a half-unconscious Jessie and smiling as she groaned in pain. The desire for vengeance burns through me like fire. I wish I could reach through the TV and squeeze the very life out of him.

Jessie’s expression doesn’t change as she’s watching Wheeler. She remains emotionless and calm. But I know she’s experiencing the same rage I do, because Wheeler is also the man who killed her parents. She forgets about her cigarette as she stares into the television, ashes dropping onto the carpet.

A jubilant Lola is asking Wheeler about my persona. They discuss my evil intentions and go through the long list of crimes I’ve committed as well as some I haven’t. According to Wheeler, I slaughtered a few people during the foiled bank robbery. He expounds upon how I faked my own death, escaped from jail and created a terrorist organization. He also describes how I performed several acts of terror, including burning down a school with children inside along with a hospital filled with helpless patients. Right now, I’m apparently busy planning on assassinating key members of the government and taking over the country.
